Personally, I think itals work better -- the vertical bar looks ugly and obtrusive. But maybe that's just me.

PK, according to Chambers, the hyphen in "to-day" was was used "until the present century" (meaning 20th, of course). The same goes for "to-morrow".Edit: spelling.
